My husband passed away unexpectedly. He was a Japanese Buddhist. He had to have an autopsy. I had never discussed such a possibility. Was this procedure contrary to his Buddhist belief?

This worries me very much!

My answer

My sympathies to you Elizabeth.
You do not have to worry. The body is just that: a shell to hold the soul together while we are alive. Even that is an illusion according to Buddhism.

The only thing clearly said about the body in Buddhism is that it is important to maintain a healthy body. Buddha said:
“To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear. “
-Buddha

If you would like to know what happens to the soul once the body dies, you can read an answer I gave to someone worried about the victims of the tsunami in March 2011.
What happens to the soul of the victims of the tsunami?

I hope this puts your fears to ease.

In Thoughts of You….

by: Bronco

Dear Elizabeth…

Your fears are unfounded, simply because you say, in passing away your hubby had an autopsy. Where has he gone, has he been erased from mind, because out of sight is never out of mind. Try as hard as you may to forget or erase him from mind, you will find it impossible…

Call it the soul, Consciousness, God, or Param Attman. Describe it as the ego self or subtle self, these are just words we need to express in an attempt to understand the complexities of the physical life. It is what we all have to do to make some kind of comparable sense to life…

What is it we miss when our loved ones go into transition, only the body perishes, because that is the natural intention. Without consciousness, the physical body would be an inanimate object, a car without it’s battery so to speak. This is where the mystery remains Elizabeth, for us all, you are never alone no matter where you are, it just seems that way…

The consciouness that your hubby has become, which is where we all derive from, is the driving fotce of all of life, this is now where hubby remains for all time, until we all become one absorbed by the pristine untainted consciousnes, which is what we all are inseparably…Sincere love Bronco…..
