My husband passed away unexpectedly. He was a Japanese Buddhist. He had to have an autopsy. I had never discussed such a possibility. Was this procedure contrary to his Buddhist belief?
This worries me very much!

My answer
My sympathies to you Elizabeth.
You do not have to worry. The body is just that: a shell to hold the soul together while we are alive. Even that is an illusion according to Buddhism.
The only thing clearly said about the body in Buddhism is that it is important to maintain a healthy body. Buddha said:
“To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear. “

If you would like to know what happens to the soul once the body dies, you can read an answer I gave to someone worried about the victims of the tsunami in March 2011.
What happens to the soul of the victims of the tsunami?
I hope this puts your fears to ease.
